How did the Stamps Scholarship help shape your undergraduate experience?
The Stamps Scholarship emboldened me to explore my passions in a way I never would have predicted. I was able to study abroad in two different countries and able to gain experience in three different types of research fields. Access to a network of other scholars who were incorporating diverse interests into careers inspired me to look into ways where I could accomplish that with my own future path.
Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your freshman self?
I would tell my freshman year self to trust herself. I often felt unsure about myself when my decisions deviated from my peers’, but I’ve come to realize life isn’t one size fits all! At the end of the day, only I can really figure out what’s the best path for me and different isn’t equivalent to wrong. Be bold, be brave, and trust yourself!
Who has had the greatest impact on you throughout your college career and how so?
My adviser for Counseling Outreach Peer Educators, Kim Martin, has been the greatest positive impact throughout my college career. She has been an amazing source of advice and wisdom, encouraging both professional and personal growth. Just one (of many!) things I’ve learned from her is the importance of resiliency. Nothing will ever 100% be like what you imagined or planned, but it’s important to adapt, make the most out of the experience, and most importantly, reflect on it.
What’s your favorite Stamps Scholar memory?
My favorite Stamps Scholar memory was attending the Stamps Scholar Regional Conference at the University of Pittsburgh. I was able to meet so many amazing scholars and learn about their interests, dreams, and passions. It was fantastic to hear about unique aspects of Stamps programs in other schools and bring those ideas back to the UMiami.
What comes next?
I am embarking on a post-baccalaureate research experience before applying to medical school.
