How did the Stamps Scholarship help shape your undergraduate experience?
It is impossible to put into words how much of an impact the Stamps Scholarship has had on my undergraduate experience and my life in general. Had it not been for this scholarship, it would have been a lot more difficult for me to attend this university, which is where I have wanted to attend since I was a little kid. I also would not have been exposed to so many inspiring and passionate scholars from around the country. I have grown both professionally and personally from my attendance at the conventions as well as Stamps sponsored events within our own chapter at the university. With this scholarship I was able to achieve one of my dreams of studying abroad in a foreign country when I studied in Salamanca, Spain for six weeks during the summer of 2015. Having these experiences has already affected me tremendously, and I can confidently say that I will continue to benefit from being a member of this group of scholars.

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your freshman self?
I would remind myself to take advantage of as much as possible while a student at the University of Michigan. I would say to join as many groups as you can and widen your interests as much as possible. Also, be open-minded and welcoming to everyone you meet, because everyone here has a story and a unique background. EXPAND YOUR COMFORT ZONE, and don’t be so afraid to fail that you don’t give new opportunities a chance. Try to change your world view, and open yourself up to others. And always, always remember how lucky you are to be given the opportunity to attend this university.

Who has had the greatest impact on you throughout your college career and how so?
I would say that my parents have had the greatest impact on me. They have showed me unending support and guidance that has been irreplaceable. I couldn’t ever thank them enough for all that they do for me (like constantly reminding me to take a breath and relax) but I appreciate it always.

Please share your most memorable Stamps Scholar experience.
The two Stamps Alternative Spring Breaks that I attended are my favorite experiences. I truly couldn’t pick one because each trip was so unique and I gained valuable perspectives from each. The first trip I went on was to New Orleans to work with Habitat for Humanity and my admiration for the spirit of the people in that city grew immensely. The last trip I went on was this past spring break, and we traveled to Washington DC to volunteer to reduce food and housing insecurity, clean out the Anacostia river, help senior citizens with household chores, and play games with children with disabilities. For me, both trips resulted in stronger friendships with fellow Stampers, and an increased appreciation for the Stamps Foundation’s strong commitment to service.

Plans after graduation?
I am taking a gap year to apply to graduate school. I am really interested in getting a Masters in social work, and I have recently realized how a public health degree would really fit in with my interests, so I am considering doing both of those. I am applying for positions in the Metro Detroit area, and leaning towards something in a field of research related to health disparities.
