How did the Stamps Scholarship help shape your undergraduate experience?
The Stamps Scholarship gave me the flexibility that I needed to grow and to take risks without the constant fear of having to worry about funding. This allowed me to embark on a myriad of enrichment opportunities both nationally and internationally.
Tell us a piece of wisdom you’ve learned over the past four years.
One of the key things that I learned over the four years is that worrying does not help. These four years have taught me the true meaning of the ‘serenity prayer’, and I have learned to appreciate the beauty in every situation – good or bad. So, rather than focusing on things that I am not able to change, I channel my energy into things that I can control.
Who has had the greatest impact on you throughout your college career and how so?
I believe that my fellow Stamps Scholar, Llona Kavege, has had the most profound impact on me. She has helped me to discover my true calling; to unearth my true, inner happiness; and, to live a life that will better benefit the society. She’s been a true source of inspiration and guidance.
What’s your favorite Stamps Scholar memory?
There are too many to choose from, but if I were to narrow it down I would say the Stamps Convention at Georgia Tech. This was my second year at the convention, and it was just as remarkable as the first year. It gave me an opportunity to meet and get to know Scholars from other partner schools, and also to bond with the Scholars from Barry. It was an enriching experience to see so many passionate young people from all over the United States showcase their love for service and scholarship.
What comes next?
I will be traveling the east coast for a while then starting my job in Miami-Dade as a high school English teacher with Teacher for America! I will also start the TFA/AmeriCorps sponsored masters option in education and social change at the University of Miami in Spring 2018.
